On Holiday – Six of 8ight

Todays picture is another from our recent “Get away from it all” holiday in Port Douglas. Although as some of you may know from reading this blog and the stories on my main website POMGONEWALKABOUT we already live far far away from it all.

So anyway the holiday was a chance to see what we were missing. Nice scenery? We have it here. Restaurants and pubs? Definitely.
Port Douglas is the place to relax over a decent cold beer and good food. Except that is I always want to be somewhere else.

Anyway nestled by the foreshore in between the palms is a quaint little wooden church called “St. Mary’s by the Sea” It wouldn’t look out of place on the set of that old TV show  “The Little House on the Prairie”

Some romantic couples are so overjoyed and overcome at eyeing this quaint little church for the first time that they immediately return to their hotel room and order room service for the rest of the week.

Amidst the flows and glows they vow to return next year to get married, much to the dismay of the future brides father who will have to foot the bill. What the happy couple do not realise is that it will all eventually end in tears and divorce. Ultimately any fond memories they may have of their first holiday spent in Port Douglas will be completely destroyed .

“You cynical bastard! Ooh there isn’t a romantic bone left in your body!”

Now where have I heard that before?

But for those who are still prepared to give it a go TRY HERE Go for your life and prepare the wedding of your dreams.

On Holiday – Three of 8ight

I used to love receiving those airmail letters from my Grandma in the UK, She’s gone now God bless her.

Her letters always ended with some firm advice “Keep out of the sea, watch out for them sharks. Remember to keep your bowels open as my husband had a stoke”

It’s good advice which I have always followed to the letter.

Now if ever I was unfortunate enough to come across a Great White or even a harmless Nurse shark for that matter, then I’m certain that my bowels would be as wide as the Grand Canyon!

Not sure if she knew about these marine Stingers though.

On Holiday – One of 8ight

Holidaying Brits in Far North Queensland thanks to the oncoming wet season have finally got the upperhand over their German counterparts in the war over sunlounges.
Heavy rain and the prospects of a wet towel has stopped the German tradition of unfairly obtaining the best spots. The Germans as many International tourists will testify have a habit of putting their towels on the prime position sun lounges, if not all in the middle of the night.
The seasonal rain however has failed to dampen the dogged British spirit.

Holidaymaker George Aithwaite who hails (pun intended, ed.) from Lancaster in the UK is rather enjoying the rain and his poolside sunlounger.

George told our reporter “It’s all about being prepared. I can sit here all day because I always remember to pack a plastic raincoat with hood. Even last year when the wife and I spent two weeks in the Sahara desert, you just never know!”
Regretably George had just nipped off to refil his flask whilst the picture was being taken.
