Yesterday – Six of 8ight

Yesterday I went to take a picture and nothing happened, but then we are talking about Mount Surprise. Just a normal day where nothing but everything happens if you get my meaning.

Reminds me of an old Monty Python Sketch

“All of a sudden nothing happened”

Don’t worry about the camera it always does that. It’s my old Pentax istDS the first shot is always blank.

Onyerbikemate – One of 8ight

Here we are again and so a new 8ight day week begins.

Each morning for the last few months I have been getting up at the crack of dawn and getting on my bike. I need the exercise and it’s a great time of day.

The glow of the morning sun bathes the Savannah in a warm healthy glow unlike my cheeks which are at times purple!

This week I shall be taking my camera along with me. Here is todays effort.

Not bad if I say so myself. Riding one handed with a Pentax DSLR held in the other.

The Big Wet  – Six of 8ight

This isn’t a bridge. Well it is if you liken it to the ‘Tarr Steps’ a prehistoric bridge built around 1000 BC in Exmoor, England.
C’mon Queensland it is the year 2009 after all. Is this the best you can do? A few slabs of prefab concrete chucked over the bed of the Einsleigh River. It is quite an important road after all. The road from Cairns to Broome it’s now cut as you can see. The causeway has been washed away in two places.

The wet season makes for an interesting time. This morning we drove a nurse out to the river so that she could be flown home via helicopter. Today there was no mail delivery as the truck couldn’t get through. We were cut off from the world both to the east and west. It felt reassuring.

We had another downpour last night, the aftermath of a cyclone that crossed into Queensland just north of Cairns. There’s something quite cosy laying in bed lulled to sleep by rain battering against a tin roof.
I couldn’t help but notice next morning that our house was surrounded by water again. It was the meeting of a cold rush of water against warm toes that gave it away as I opened the door to let the dog out. Sigh! We can’t use the toilet or shower again.
Its quite funny really, you have to laugh. I did and so will you too. I can hear you guffaw now. A sort of quick HA! Followed by a short resonant Typical! Please feel free to drop in your own Tut!

We have a visitor in town, an Australian who works in China on behalf of Aus Aid. I listened to his interesting stories and found it very ironic. Australia is providing all this aid to one of the most booming countries in the world, the same one that spent billions on hosting the last Olympic games.
Yes I laughed and wryly smiled to myself as I walked home through the mud in my wellies to my house without sanitation. C’mon Ox we’ve got work to do.

On Holiday – Eight of 8ight

So anyway the holiday is over we’ve had a great time but now we have to pack up and drive home.

Hmmn, I see that the wet season has began whilst we were away.

Maybe we should stay another night, I see that the road is closed!
