Yesterday – Six of 8ight

Yesterday I went to take a picture and nothing happened, but then we are talking about Mount Surprise. Just a normal day where nothing but everything happens if you get my meaning.

Reminds me of an old Monty Python Sketch

“All of a sudden nothing happened”

Don’t worry about the camera it always does that. It’s my old Pentax istDS the first shot is always blank.

My Blurb book – Three of 8ight

Today’s image was taken with an old Agfa Isoly plastic roll film camera. The neg was scanned using an Epson V700 then tweaked in Lightroom. Apparently the Agfa is the camera that the cult classic Plastic Diana camera is based on.

The Big Wet  – Eight of 8ight

Normal Service will be resumed as soon as possible!
Limited internet access, none yesterday at all and no mobile phone coverage. Good old Telstra!
There is lots of water up this way at the moment. The wet season is with us! With roads cut, bridges down and a bunch of tourists having to be rescued from the roof of their campervan that was stuck in a fast rising creek.
Quite a scary and expensive experience for them as their rental vehicle is a write off!

The Big Wet  – Five of 8ight

But there’s plenty more on its way this is only the beginning so the locals tell me!
Fred. “I remember the big wet of 74 there were crocodiles swimming down the main street.”  Bill. “The pub was flooded we had to drink on the roof!”

“Yes and remember when we sent young Greg back down to the bar to get another round? He never came back, that big Salty must have took him”

“His mother was upset”

“So was I! Nearly died of thirst”

My Life and Other Animals  – One of 8ight

Another 8ight days so a new theme begins.

Living in Far North Queensland I’m reminded of that book and TV series “My Family and Other Animals” the autobiographical work by Naturalist Gerald Durrell. You just never know what’s going to show up next! My nerve endings are in ribbons. Only yesterday I was walking through the house and running my hand over the top of the settee, as you do. Bugger me there was a ten inch lizard sitting there!

We’ve had a Snake in the Laundry, Snakes in the garden, Lizards on the settee, Gecko’s everywhere. You just never know what’s going to turn up next. Spiders did I mention spiders and Crocs in the creek? Feral Pigs over the back fence and each evening thousands of bats darken the sky. It’s an amazing sight.

Why only the other day there was a large Praying Mantis in the salad. I’ve heard of the pub grub, but that’s ridiculous.

Last night our resident Cane Toad showed up. He sits on the doormat, he has a face that only a mother could love. Apparently as an honorary Queenslander it is my civic duty to kill it! Not shoot it with a camera.

Some bright spark in 1935 thought it a good idea to release the Toad into Far North Queensland to control the Cane Beetle. I’m not sure how many Cane Beetles there are, but there’s over 200 million of these bloody toads!

They are a national pest, kill native animals and are currently on the march over to WA.  I’m not sure if the Queensland Government has any preventative measures in place to limit their number other than to supply every child over the age of 5 with a Nine-Iron.

Twitching  – Three of 8ight

So named because they always seem to travel around in groups of twelve.

Up here they are also known as Happy Jacks because that is what they are. Happy all the time, tame and cheeky with it.

When we first came across them in outback NSW I referred to them as ‘Thankyou birds” because that is what they appeared to be saying, especially after a few crumbs of cake.

Twitching  – One of 8ight

A pair of Wedge Tailed Eagles spotted by the side of the Oodnadatta Track just out of William Creek in South Australia.

One of those instances when you grab the camera and just keep walking closer and closer until I couldn’t believe just how close. This fine pair of Wedges just couldn’t have cared less.

Amazing experience.

On Holiday – Seven of 8ight

Unfortunately for Lt. James Cook his troubles were only to begin after his ship Endeavour ran aground nearby on a reef in 1770. So he rather appropriately named the area he had charted earlier in the day Cape Tribulation.

A beautiful beach and just a short drive north of Port Douglas.
Whilst there I made a deal with the Marine Stingers and shovel nosed sharks.
I promised to stay on land if they stayed in the water.

A larger copy of today’s picture can be seen over at my PomGoneWalkabout website. It is currently Picture of the Week.
