Black Kite?

Black Kite?

So there we both were, the Bush Nurse and myself out at the airstrip waiting for the Royal Flying Doctor to arrive. To help pass the time we were treated to our very own private flying display. Possibly a Black Kite on the lookout for a meal.

Eat the snakes, eat the snakes. They are good for you plus you’ll be doing me and my heart a favour. Especially as I nearly stepped on a Black Whip snake yesterday!

When I first emigrated to Australia I noticed that the birds in the garden where sort of different compared to the Starlings, Sparrows and Blackbirds that used to frequent my English garden.

They were sort of brighter looking, more colourful?  But there’s something about a drab English garden in November. Stark skeleton branches of tree, silhouetted against grey sky. Dark, miserable but cosy and welcoming all the same. Especially when looking from the inside out. A roaring log fire.
Living rooms lit by yellow glows from Mr. Edisons incandescent light.
A sky that threats sleet.
I’ll put the kettle on, there’s some Pyclets in the bread bin.

I watched a film once, well I’ve seen several over the years.

But this particular one was shown on Boxing day in England in the 1970’s.

Storm Boy it was called and was set in the Coorong of South Australia.
It is based on quite a famous book by the author Colin Thiele.
All about a boy, a bit of a loner befriending a Pelican. Mr. Percival he was called. Here I am years later living in the same country surrounded by Pelicans.
I’ve visited the Coorong.

It is in slightly better health than the late Mr. Thiele, but only just.
They’ve taken too much water out of the Murray that feeds it. Someone hundreds of kilometres upstream thought it would be a good idea to grow cotton. My underpants are made in China.

I came across this wonderful outback scene whilst delivery the mail to a remote station on the Strzelecki Track in South Australia.

Not the sharpest picture I have ever taken but then again shooting through the windscreen doing 50km in a Defender on a private station track well what do you expect?

So named because they always seem to travel around in groups of twelve.

Up here they are also known as Happy Jacks because that is what they are. Happy all the time, tame and cheeky with it.

When we first came across them in outback NSW I referred to them as ‘Thankyou birds” because that is what they appeared to be saying, especially after a few crumbs of cake.

A rather inquisitive Pied Butcher bird called in at our camp at Cobbald Gorge  last year.
