On Holiday – Eight of 8ight

So anyway the holiday is over we’ve had a great time but now we have to pack up and drive home.

Hmmn, I see that the wet season has began whilst we were away.

Maybe we should stay another night, I see that the road is closed!

On Holiday – Seven of 8ight

Unfortunately for Lt. James Cook his troubles were only to begin after his ship Endeavour ran aground nearby on a reef in 1770. So he rather appropriately named the area he had charted earlier in the day Cape Tribulation.

A beautiful beach and just a short drive north of Port Douglas.
Whilst there I made a deal with the Marine Stingers and shovel nosed sharks.
I promised to stay on land if they stayed in the water.

A larger copy of today’s picture can be seen over at my PomGoneWalkabout website. It is currently Picture of the Week.

On Holiday – Six of 8ight

Todays picture is another from our recent “Get away from it all” holiday in Port Douglas. Although as some of you may know from reading this blog and the stories on my main website POMGONEWALKABOUT we already live far far away from it all.

So anyway the holiday was a chance to see what we were missing. Nice scenery? We have it here. Restaurants and pubs? Definitely.
Port Douglas is the place to relax over a decent cold beer and good food. Except that is I always want to be somewhere else.

Anyway nestled by the foreshore in between the palms is a quaint little wooden church called “St. Mary’s by the Sea” It wouldn’t look out of place on the set of that old TV show  “The Little House on the Prairie”

Some romantic couples are so overjoyed and overcome at eyeing this quaint little church for the first time that they immediately return to their hotel room and order room service for the rest of the week.

Amidst the flows and glows they vow to return next year to get married, much to the dismay of the future brides father who will have to foot the bill. What the happy couple do not realise is that it will all eventually end in tears and divorce. Ultimately any fond memories they may have of their first holiday spent in Port Douglas will be completely destroyed .

“You cynical bastard! Ooh there isn’t a romantic bone left in your body!”

Now where have I heard that before?

But for those who are still prepared to give it a go TRY HERE Go for your life and prepare the wedding of your dreams.

On Holiday – Five of 8ight

Not the most comfortable of seats to watch a movie in. The Land Rover Defender! But the film is an epic and we loved it. Shame that the tall poppy knocking brigade around the country are chopping it down.

Well I’ve got news for you lot.  There isn’t a yellow brick road in Kansas either! Strewth.

Drive in Movies. They never really caught on in England, maybe due to the weather? Still “Singing in the rain” starring Gene Kelly tap dancing to the beat of hundreds of Lucas windscreen wipers, would have been quite surreal… Then again maybe not.

On Holiday – Three of 8ight

I used to love receiving those airmail letters from my Grandma in the UK, She’s gone now God bless her.

Her letters always ended with some firm advice “Keep out of the sea, watch out for them sharks. Remember to keep your bowels open as my husband had a stoke”

It’s good advice which I have always followed to the letter.

Now if ever I was unfortunate enough to come across a Great White or even a harmless Nurse shark for that matter, then I’m certain that my bowels would be as wide as the Grand Canyon!

Not sure if she knew about these marine Stingers though.

On Holiday – Two of 8ight

Nah Luton Airport!

Most people go on holiday because they feel the need to get away from it all. So when you live in a town of 65 people and two and a half hours drive to the nearest McDonald’s like we do, what’s our excuse?

Well sometimes living in a small town can have its moments. You still feel the need to get away which is why last week we found ourselves sunning it up in Port Douglas.
Port Douglas a place for the rich and famous, it used to be such a sleepy little fishing town, to some extent it still is but the brochures seem to be  obsessed with telling you about the latest visit by an ex US president or film star. To be honest who gives a shit? All I want is a cold beer and good food, of which plenty was available at the two main pubs in town.

The place may of changed in the ten years since my last visit but there is still a good atmosphere and a down to earth feel about the place.

The locals are still friendly and eager to please even though their patience must no doubt have been slowly worn down over the years by the designer tourist.

Campari and Soda sir?

Bugger that give me a schooner of  XXXX!
